About the Blog

The blog

The Risk Science Blog is written by faculty, staff and students associated with the University of Michigan Risk Science Center.

We write about our work, our thoughts and ideas on science-informed approaches to human health risk, our perspectives on contemporary health risk issues, and what is going on in the Risk Science Center.  These are our own opinions and thoughts – they represent how we see the world and what we as individual authors think is interesting and important.  They do not necessarily represent the opinions and views of the Risk Science Center, the University of Michigan School of Public Health, or the University of Michigan.

What’s that image all about?

The image to the top-right of the blog is a slow-exposure photo of a two-armed pendulum (specifically, the Swinging Sticks Kinetic Desk Sculpture), showing complex motion.  The pendulum was used by Andrew Maynard in his inaugural lecture as the Charles and Rita Gelman Risk Science professor as a metaphor for the increasingly complex challenges of making science-informed and socially, economically and politically-responsive decisions on human health risks in the 21st century.  The pendulum also featured in the movie Iron Man 2!
